This week in Year 1, we’ve had a busy time diving into our topic, Autumn and the Local Area.
To start the week, we explored the colours we associate with autumn. We looked at pictures of various autumn scenes, including leaves, animals, and trees. We noticed that the most common colours were red, orange, yellow, and brown. After that, we created our very own autumn paintings using those colours, and they turned out beautifully!
In Phonics, we focused on the sound’s ‘m’ and ‘n’. These can be tricky because they not only sound similar, but they also look alike when we write them. We practiced saying the sounds, making sure to shape our mouths correctly for each one, and even sang songs to help us try and remember them.
In Maths, we concentrated on place value, learning to recognise tens and ones. Using base 10 blocks, we made different numbers up to 20. We discovered that one block of 10 is the same size as 10 ones stuck together, which helped us understand that we don’t need to count the tens individually – we just know they’re worth 10! We also listened to a catchy song to help us remember when to use tens and ones.
We’ve also begun practising our writing. We wrote about something we did or somewhere we went over the summer holidays. It sounds like we all had a great time, whether visiting family, going to the park, or even flying to faraway places. Everyone worked hard to form their letters carefully and finish sentences with a full stop. Da iawn!
During Tree Top Thursday, we went on a hunt for signs of autumn. We hoped to find lots of colourful leaves, acorns, and fir cones, but it seems we might have been a little early. Hopefully, we’ll have more luck in the coming weeks as autumn unfolds.
In PE, we played a game called “Get into Groups of…” This was a bit challenging because we wanted to stay with our friends, but sometimes we needed more people or had too many! It was lots of fun, and we all had a great time.
Have a lovely weekend, Year 1, and we’ll see you again next week!
