Year 1: Weekly round up

What a busy first week back we have had in Year 1! As I am sure you’ll all be aware, we have started practising for this year’s Christmas concert. Parts have come home for children to practise so please can parents help them to memories their lines. Information about costumes will follow in the coming weeks.

In Maths this week we have been focusing on learning our teen numbers. We discovered that a teen number is made up of 1 ten and a several units depending on the number. For example, the number 15 is 1 ten and 5 units. This was a little tricky to understand at first, but we used some base 10 blocks which really helped us. In phonics we’ve been learning about our first trigraph! This is three letters that make one sound. In this case it was the ‘igh’ sound that you find in night and high.

As the week has progressed, we’ve moved on to thinking about Remembrance Day and what it is all about. On Tuesday we made some lovely poppies that came home with the children today. In PE we had a go at some army obstacles to see if we were as fit as the soldiers have to be! Then today we held a 2 minute silence whilst holding our poppies and gave thanks for the soldiers that fought for us and those that continue to do so. Everyone was really respectful during the silence and Mr Hall was very proud of you all. Da iawn!

In the coming weeks the children will be having a go at making their very own Superworm sock puppet! In order to do this can I ask for the children to bring in any old or odd sock for them to use. This doesn’t have to be a brand new sock or any particular colour (please avoid an all black sock if possible), it only needs to be clean. I will keep them in a safe place for them to use when that lesson comes around.

Have a lovely weekend Year 1!
