Year 1: Weekly round up

It’s really starting to feel like autumn here in Year 1! We began the week with an autumn walk, looking for signs of the season. We used our senses to find something we could see, hear, smell, and feel. We then recorded our findings and used adjectives to describe each discovery.
In Maths, we focused on number formation. We enjoyed a catchy song that helped us remember how to write each number. After that, we painted the numbers using cotton buds, carefully following the direction of the arrows. We had to really concentrate to stay within the lines! Later in the week, we practised writing the numbers with pencils, making sure to write them neatly and accurately.
In Phonics, we’ve been learning about digraphs—when two letters come together to make one sound. This week, we focused on the digraph ‘qu,’ finding words like “queen” and “quack” that contain this sound.
Thursday was National Poetry Day, and we wrote autumn poems with Ms. Keddie. These turned out wonderfully, and Mr. Hall enjoyed reading the creative words we had used.
During Treetop Thursday, we each collected a special autumn leaf. We thought about their size, colour, and what made them stand out. Today, we wrote about what we liked most about our leaves, using adjectives to describe them. Some said their leaf was spiky, others said it was colourful, and one leaf even looked spooky—just like Halloween!
Well done, everyone! You’ve all worked incredibly hard and definitely earned a restful weekend.
See you next week!
