Another fun week here in Year 1! We’ve been busy learning about Autumn, with a special focus on animals that hibernate. The children discovered that some animals take a long winter nap—called hibernation—because it’s too cold and food is scarce. We also learnt that some birds migrate south to warmer places where there’s still food, while animals like squirrels gather and store food to get through the colder months.
In addition, we’ve been learning our Autumn colours in Cymraeg. The children enjoyed colouring in an autumn leaf and learnt the Welsh words for red, orange, yellow, pink, purple, brown, and green: coch, oren, melyn, pinc, porffor, brown, and gwyrdd. It was wonderful to hear them using Welsh to ask for colours—da iawn, Year 1!
In Phonics, we focused on b’s and d’s. These can be tricky because they look alike and sound a little similar. To help, we used the word “bed” as a memory aid to remember which is which.
In Maths, we continued our work on place value, exploring how numbers are made up of tens and ones. The children enjoyed a song that helped them understand this concept.
Thursday was a special day—it was European Language Day! In Year 1, we focused on Spanish and learnt how to say “hello,” “goodbye,” “please,” and “thank you.” We even tried some salsa dancing, which the children loved! I hope you enjoyed watching the videos on Seesaw. In the afternoon, we had churros with chocolate sauce, which were a big hit!
Next week, as part of our Health and Wellbeing lessons, we’ll be learning about using kind hands and understanding appropriate and inappropriate touch. We’ll use the NSPCC Pantosaurus video to guide us through this important topic.
Have a wonderful weekend, Year 1!
