Year 1: Weekly round up

Welcome back Year 1! What a fantastic first week we have had to this term. As you will see from the earlier post, we started the week by going on Safari! The children loved discovering the different animals around the classroom and recording their faviourates.

This led us to our next topic lesson where we discussed what we might need to take with us on a real trip to the Jungle. We thought of lots of important items, everything from food and water to maps and cameras. But which was the most important and why? We’ve only got so much room in our backpacks so we can’t take everything. So the children made lists of what they thought was the most important thing to take and what they’d leave behind. They all put a lot of thought into their decisions and we saw some beautiful writing as well. Da iawn pawn!

In Maths this week we’ve been focusing on place value and making numbers using tens and ones. This was tricky to start with, but with some practice we soon got the hang of it. Some children made some really big numbers which was brilliant to see. In our Phonics lesson this week we’ve been learning a new digraph ‘ar’. As well as this we’ve been recapping some of the Phase 3 sounds we’ve previously learnt.

In Tree Top Thursday this week we have been comparing Ruabon to the Jungle. What is the same and what is different? We took pictures of lots of different things to compare and talked about. We will explore these comparisons further in the coming weeks.

As this week has been Bible story week, so today we have been learning and roll playing the Bible story of the Good Samaritan. We learnt about how it is important to be kind. Not just those we consider to be our friends, but to everyone. Even perhaps to those who we may not always get along with, just as it was in the story.

Well done on a fab first week back Year 1. Enjoy your weekend

Seesaw
We are still waiting for some Seesaw letters to be signed and returned back to school. I have sent an additional copy of the letter home with children today. Please check in school bags for these and return them asap. Sadly, I am unable to start Year 1’s Seesaw until these are all returned. If you are unsure please come and see me before or after school.
